Overview of controls
The icons to the left are used to control the construction, sound and linking functions. The tutor side of the program acts like a desktop publishing program but it also includes controls involving sound and dynamic operations

Other functions include analyzing text for grade level and opening a built-in web browser which defaults to Wikipedia. Reading exercises can quickly be constructed on any subject by importing text and images from Wikipedia.

If spelling, comprehension, or reading test lessons are opened from this screen, they will automatically be named and associated with the current graphic reading lesson.

Graphic Reading- Tutor Screen

Initially, most people would like to use existing lessons in order to quickly get the benefits of the Teaching-Engine program. There are many lessons available from the original installation, the lessons CD and the Teaching-Engine website.

Right away however, it will be seen that creating your own lessons on material that is directly related to the current school curriculum will benefit a student greatly because it can directly affect the student's school marks.

Probably the easiest and quickest first lesson would be spelling, because it only involves typing in spelling words. The most likely words would be the latest spelling words given by the school to the student to study. (See Spelling)

But in reality, the most important skill to be learned by anyone would be reading. It is the gateway to all future academic work and is absolutely essential for a future of financial and personal success.

Some children find learning to read to be easy and natural, while others have a miserable time trying to read. The Teaching-Engine began as a remedial program and although it has grown to be a comprehensive education system, the special remedial techniques continue to be available throught the program.

 

 

 

 

Graphic Reading is the main storyboard for reading practice. It is also the anchor module for the other submodules such as comprehension, spelling and reading test. (See Literacy) There is a screen for the Tutor where the lesson can be created or modified and a different one for the student.

The main objective of the Graphic Reading module is to provide reading practice and support for the student. Here, there will be sounds for all the phonics, words, phrases and the whole text are instantly available for the student. This means that the student can work independently because if there is any word or text he cannot read, the sounds can be instantly heard. Also objects such as pictures, videos, animations, sound effects, pop-up arrows all can be included to make the lesson more attractive. Special objects such as phonic blocks, phonic grids and normal grids provide methods to organize and provide special learning tools for the student.Phonics practice and sight reading practice can be included in any Graphic Reading lessnon.
